MANAGING ILL-HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE

Absenteeism is, without a doubt, one of the most challenging employment management issues with which employers struggle on a continuous basis. The cost of sick absenteeism in South Africa is more than R19 billion per annum which is a huge financial burden for businesses to manage. The objectives of this workshop is to explore the legal procedural and substantive requirements of dismissal for incapacity due to ill health within the workplace.

This workshop is aimed at Manager, Supervisors, Union represetatives and HR Specialists.

This is a one – day workshop.

THE OUTLINE FOR THE WORKSHOP IS AS FOLLOWS:
- Understand the code of good practice in relation to managing incapacity and subsequent dismissals.
- Managing Employees who are physically unwell (illness, accidents etc),
- Managing employees who are psychologically unwell (mental, drugs, alcohol etc),
- Managing employees who are not genuinely ill.
- Identifying a valid medical certificate and when are you able to reject a medical certificate.
- Role of traditional healers within a South African context.
- Managing the scourge and how to deal with “fake” medical certificates
- Medical Boarding
- Discuss recent case law in relation to incapacity and their effect on the workplace
- When / how can I reject a sick not?
- Present and discuss relevant case studies
